BLACK STAFF Del Rey Book Description

"For more than three decades, New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks has ruled the epic fantasy realm with his legendary Shannara series. With each new novel the mythos has deepened, ever more fascinating characters have arisen, and increasingly breathtaking vistas of magical adventure have emerged. Now, in Bearers of the Black Staff, the revelatory Genesis of Shannara cycle continues the evolution of the most beloved world in imaginative fiction.

Five hundred years have passed since the devastating demon-led war that tore apart the United States, leaving nothing but scorched and poisoned ruins and nearly exterminating humankind. Those who escaped the carnage and blight were led to sanctuary by the boy savior known as Hawk—the gypsy morph. In an idyllic valley, its borders warded by powerful magic against the horrors beyond, humans, elves, and mutants alike found a place they believed would be their home forever.

But after five centuries, the unimaginable has come to pass: the cocoon of protective magic surrounding the valley has vanished. When Sider Ament, only surviving descendant of the Knights of the Word, detects unknown predators stalking the valley, he fears the worst. And when Panterra Qu and Prue Liss, expert Trackers from the human village of Glensk Wood, find two of their own gruesomely killed, there can be no doubt: the once safe haven of generations has been laid bare and vulnerable to whatever still lurks in the wasteland of the outside world.

Together, Ament, the two young Trackers and a daring Elf princess race to spread word of the encroaching danger—and spearhead plans to defend their ancestral home. But suspicion and hostility among their countrymen threaten to doom their efforts from within. While beyond the breached borders, a ruthless Troll army masses for invasion. And in response, the last wielder of the black staff and its awesome magic must find a successor to carry on the fight against the cresting new wave of evil.

UK Book Description for BLACK STAFF

Amazon.co.uk has recently posted the book description for Terry's next book, Bearers of the Black Staff:

Five hundred years have passed since the devastating demon-led war that almost exterminated humankind. Those who escaped the carnage were led to sanctuary by the boy saviour known as Hawk: the gypsy morph. But now, the unimaginable has come to pass: the cocoon of protective magic surrounding the valley has vanished. When Sider Ament, last surviving Knight of the Word, detects unknown predators stalking the valley, and Trackers from the human village of Glensk Wood, find two of their own gruesomely killed, there can be no doubt: the once safe haven of generations has been laid bare. Together, the young Trackers, the aging Knight, and a daring Elf princess race to spread word of the encroaching danger. But suspicion and hostility among their countrymen threaten to doom their efforts from within, while beyond the breached borders, a ruthless Troll army masses for invasion. Standing firm between the two, the last wielder of the black staff and its awesome magic must find a successor to carry on the fight against the cresting new wave of evil.

As you can see, it takes place 500 years after the events of The Gypsy Morph. Sider Ament, in my opinion, is one of Terry's most complex and interesting characters. I think he's going to gain a cultish-like following among all of you fans.

More from the US book description soon. And I think in the next week or so we'll be able to showcase the covers for both the UK and US books! Stay tuned!

Free Readin' of The Dark Thorn

Over the last few years I've had hundreds of Terry Brooks fans offer their support in my own writing endeavors. I've been the administrator of this website for 14 years now, and I suppose I've built a family of sorts around the website. I love it. It's why I stay year after year.

It feels good to have that kind of care from people I have yet to meet.

Last week, one of you wrote me an email asking why I haven't posted more of my book, The Dark Thorn. To be honest, I hadn't even thought of it. I see it as a work still in need of a professional editor's attentions. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought, "Why not show more of it?"

I am in the midst of redesigning this website as well as my personal website. While I work on both, I decided to upload the first five chapters of The Dark Thorn for anyone and everyone to read on the placeholder page of my site. I do not know if it will be published; I do not know if you will even like it. All I know is that Terry liked it, and he suspects all of you will too.

Click HERE to read the first 5 chapters of The Dark Thorn. Then feel free to share with me your thoughts on Terry's Forum or on my own Facebook page.

Vote for Garet Jax against Rothfuss's Kvothe!!

Kaitlin Heller and David Pomerico—two obviously busy editors at Del Rey and Spectra—thought that it would be fun to take some time out of our schedules to speculate on who would win if the greatest fantasy and science fiction characters were put into a March Madness-style bracket, and asked to duke it out.

The answer, though, would be determined by the experts, namely, you.

Cage Matches 2010!

Here is the direct link for Garet Jax vs. Kvothe!!

Go Team Garet Jax! Ha!

As readers, I'm sure you know many of these characters intimately. You know their strengths, you know their weaknesses.

And most of all, you know that there's no way in hell Drizzt Do'Urden would ever lose a sword fight with Hiro Protagonist...or would he?

What Kaitlin and David did, then, is all the leg-work, culling through the tomes of science fiction and fantasy to put together a field of thirty-two worthy* combatants. They—as well as a number of dedicated members of the Del Rey, Spectra, and Suvudu teams—put together stat sheets, just in case someone wasn't as familiar with the character as they ought to be (Yes, ought! And you call yourself nerds) to be.

And then they ran extensive simulations** to see who would come out on top in these first rounds of match-ups. The results, in some circumstances, might surprise you. They definitely surprised us.

But those were just simulations. It's up to the readers to vote on who they think would win. It's up to them to convince others they're right. Think their analysis is wrong? Let us know. Clearly it's you who are wrong, but we'll humor you.

At the end of the day, what matters is that two men (or women... or elves... or one elf and one "other") are entering the ring starting Monday, and a few days later (voting for the Monday matches close Thursday; voting for the Wednesday closes Sunday), only one of them is leaving.

And then the second round begins!

Make your voice heard.

16) Kahlan Amnell vs. 17) Drizzt Do'Urden

12) Harry Dresden vs. 21) Conan the Barbarian

13) Roland Deschain -- The Gunslinger vs 20) Elric

Wednesday, March 10th

Video of Terry

A fan sent in a video of her talking to Terry while attending the Surrey Writers Conference in October 2009. Terry attended the conference as a speaker and teacher, as he does from time to time.

You can read my article about it and watch the video HERE!

If any of you hopeful writers have the chance to take part in a class taught by Terry, do so. He is honest, fair, and you will learn a great deal.
