Bearers of the Black Staff has clocked in at #5 on the New York Times list. The last Shannara book, The Gypsy Morph, hit #2 two years ago. At that time Kathy Reichs, a mystery/thriller writer, bumped Terry from being #1. This time Kathy Reichs hit #3.
So why the drop from #2 to #5?
The New York Times list is based on sales. If some odd titles get hot by word of mouth, it can push new releases down the list. This is what happened to Black Staff and Reich’s book. Right now Stieg Larsson is posthumously experiencing massive sales with The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and The Help by Kathryn Stockett has been on the list for 74 weeks. These are book club books or books receiving a ton of public exposure.
Still, #5 is nothing to sneeze at, especially when the oddities of #1 and #4 contribute.
Congratulations, Terry, on yet another New York Times bestseller!
