My second recommendation this month – that’s right, it’s a twofer – is a young adult book called MATCHED by Ally Condie. I know nothing of the author, but the book is very compelling. It is another look at themes familiar to readers of BRAVE NEW WORLD and 1984, but primarily it is a consideration what it would be like if everything were decided for you by Big Brother. The word ‘matched’ refers to the way in which teens are paired off with partners chosen for them. In this world, everything is decided from how you dress to what you eat to when you die. But what if someone starts tinkering with the results? Very scary stuff without being overtly violent. You might want to give it a try.
