But you don’t have to wait for publication day to begin reading it!
Terry and Del Rey Books have authorized the early release of Chapter One, for your reading enjoyment. It features Aphenglow Elessedil, Druid of Paranor, as she searches for lost knowledge in the bowels of the Elven royal palace. Aphen is one of the main protagonists of the novel and it is her will and wits that set in motion the story that will shake the Four Lands to its core.
And nothing will be the same again!
Here is the first two paragraphs of Wards of Faerie:
It was almost one year to the day after she began her search of the Elven histories that Aphenglow Elessedil found the diary.
She was deep in the underground levels of the palace, sitting alone at the same table she occupied each day, surrounded by candles to combat the darkness and wrapped in her heavy cloak to ward off the chill. Carefully she read each document, letter, or memoir in what had taken on the attributes of a never- ending slog. It was late and her eyes were burning with fatigue and dust, her concentration beginning to wane, and her longing for bed to grow. She had been reading each day, all day, for so long that she was beginning to think she might never see Paranor and her fellow Druids again.

I can’t WAIT for the rest!!!!!!!!!!
Delicious. Simply delicious.
WOW! Terry you have done it once again my only problem after reading the first chapter is that now I have to wait for Shaun to send me my signed copy after you sign it…errr wait strike that I will just buy another copy when I see you in Lexington, KY this year at your book tour! What a tease that chapter was!
A gripping read as always — you are a master of your craft, Terry! I eagerly await its release so my initial curiousities may be sated; only to be left unfulfilled again as I yearn for books 2 and 3 in the set. May your ink well never dry and your pen never leave words unwritten!
Quite enticing! I’m really looking forward to this next series. Can’t wait!
I don’t want to wait for the rest! I want it now! LOL, I will be waiting with anticipation and very little patience.
Psst, ya think anyone can sneak me an early copy?
I can’t wait to read more.
Wow, intriguing stuff. Like the other fans, I can’t wait to read the whole book.
This is amazing, like the old Brooks. I was a bit disappointed in the recent books, but this seems very promising. I have a feeling Aleia will become the first Ellcrys, and gaining the elfstones somehow enabled the “Darklings” to come to verge of tilting the balance in the favor…before the Elves and Ellcrys lock them away in the Forbidding.
the only problem with this is, a user cant wield the power of an elfstone without ownership being given freely, and it is clearly not given to the demons in this situation.
but the elves cant use the power of the elfstones to protect themselves if they dont have them either 😀
i like the other idea of her being the first ellcrys tho 😀
If the owner of the Elfstones dies, the next person who picks them up is the new owner. As evidenced by Ahren Elessedil in Antrax. 🙂
This definitely piques my interest for this next book. I can’t wait until August. This will be a great year for us Shannara fans!
I really enjoyed the last duology Bearers of the Black Staff and Measure of the Magic.
I’m crossing fingers and toes for the Advanced Reader Copy. It would be awesome to win it.

WOW!!!!!!!!! VERY EXCITING I CANT WAIT TO BUY THE BOOK AND READ THE REST !!!!!!!
I shouldn’t have read this because now I am painfully waiting for the rest of the book,
which is hard to do. Terry is the best, I love all his books.
wow! that first chapter is wonderful! has me eagerly waiting for the book! I too think Aleia is the first Ellcrys! this is going to be so worth waiting for.
as to the bearers of the black staff duology– tell me I am not the only one who felt the measure of the magic left me wanting a third book?!?!
There is no third book. Terry is writing five more novels between the time period of Measure and First King though.
