TEDTalks: Why I Write About Elves

Back in November 2012, Terry was invited to speak at TedxRainier. He used the fifteen minutes to talk about the importance of fantasy fiction in our world and why he writes it.

If you haven’t seen this, you really should watch it. It is interesting to understand why Terry does what he does and has continued to do it for so long. Hope you enjoy it!

  1. Nice picture…but no sound.
Disappointed that I couldn’t hear what Terry had to say.
My sound works but when it actually clicks to his talk, all sound stopped.

  2. The theme of transgression and redemption that Terry talks about got me thinking about The Elf Queen of Shannara, which despite being part of the Heritage series, I think can stand on its own.

  3. Thank you, Shawn, for posting this link. This was very interesting and inspiring to me. Terry seems like a great guy and I can really understand where he’s coming from. Fantasy readers, like myself, are very grateful for guys like him. He’s the best in the biz… and funny too!

  4. He writes about elves because it is the place he can explore truth and the human condition. What works for me? That is a great question, one worth exploring. I’m so glad that Mr. Brooks has never grown up completely and can still use his imagination the way he does. The first book I ever read as a child was “Magic Kingdom for Sale Sold” and I’ve been hooked on his writing ever since.

  5. So nice to hear an author talk of their love for their subject. Have been a fan of Terry’s books for 30 years and loved everyone of them. I look forward to the next 35 years.

  6. I enjoyed watching that. Terry is a very well spoken person and I feel I got to know him a bit better.
