It is the second volume in the Defenders of Shannara, a set of books that lead into the final Shannara trilogy that Terry will begin writing next year. Like The High Druid’s Blade, the story centers around Paxon, inheritor of the Sword of Leah, the marvelous blade first seen in The Sword of Shannara and imbued with magic by Allanon in The Wishsong of Shannara.
Here is more about The Darkling Child:
From New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks comes a thrilling stand-alone novel in his legendary Shannara series—the perfect place for new readers to begin.
After taking up his enchanted sword against the dark sorcerer Arcannen, Paxon Leah has become the sworn protector of the Druid order. Now a critical hour is at hand, as a beloved High Druid nears the end of her reign and prepares to pass from the mortal world to the one beyond. There is little time for Paxon to mourn his friend and benefactor before duty summons him. For in a distant corner of the Four Lands, the magic of the wishsong has been detected. Paxon must accompany a Druid emissary to find its source—and ensure the formidable power is not wielded by the wrong hands.
But danger is already afoot in the village of Portlow. Gentle traveling minstrel Reyn Frosch possesses the uncanny gift, and curse, of the wishsong. And now his coveted abilities have captured the malevolent interest of none other than Arcannen—whose quest for power is exceeded only by his thirst for vengeance. The lone survivor of a brutal assault on a notorious pirate city, the sorcerer is determined to retaliate against the Federation’s elite military guard—and use the devastating power of the wishsong as his ultimate weapon.

For the first time since Wishsong was published I am behind on reading Shannara! I have yet to read High Druids Blade, but that doesn’t stop me from being excited about this one… I’ll probably wind up reading them both over the course of a week!
Shawn, I also like the new look of the website, nice work!
Thanks, Luke! The new site will be in flux a bit but the framework is in place now.
Hey there Shawn. Do you have dates yet for the signing at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton, OR. I contacted Powell’s and they don’t have dates posted that far in advance. Is it later this year significantly?
The Darkling Child publishes June 9, 2015. The signing events for the book will be that release week. Powell’s doesn’t have a date yet because it hasn’t been set up yet — but undoubtedly will be.
Terry. Please come to Calgary Alberta Canada so I can get an autographed copy of your latest book. Thank you.
PS: Calgary is a great city.
Terry was at the 2009 Con-Version in Calgary. So he’s been there.
I’m very excited about The Darling Child and MTv Elfstones! But I am behind on reading the first book in Defenders! But will purchase the second book upon release… Having said that, will the short stories Paladins be released in a Hardcover collection?
When Terry has enough short stories for a hardcover collection, the Paladins stories will be included. That won’t be for five or six years though at the rate Terry is writing short stories these days.
Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa
I am very excited as i recently started reading Terry Brooks books after a 5year absents – finishing off High Druid of Shannara (book3) and have The Heritage of Shannara waiting … will get to Defenders of Shannara soon. IA
The last signed copy which I pre ordered had no signature, I feel like I shouldn’t pre-order books anymore, or did I do something wrong using the link from this website and pre-ordering it from Barnes and Noble?
You did something wrong. The Signed Page is the only website posted on Terry’s site featuring signed books.
Every book i have that Terry Brooks’ has written I have is a first edition. I also about 12 of those books autographed by Mr. Brooks. My collection also includes a first edition of “The Wishsong of Shanara” in the Russian language. I can post pictures of my collection to Mr. Brooks web page if you would like. I am looking forward to getting his new book also
Shawn and Terry,
Fell in love with the Sword in 1977 when I was just 10 yrs old! Now, 48, a teacher in upstate NY, I have read and re-read the Shannara series several times over. I would like to ask if Terry ever plans a visit to Hamilton College, his alma mater? Thanks.
I learned from the first shanarra trilogy that waiting for all the books to be written is a better wait than reading a book and waiting for the next to come before you know what finally happens.
Is it too late to order a signed copy of the new book? Always been curious does Terry actually sign them himself for these online pre-orders or are they digitally copied on there? Also one more thing, I know the book will be publishing on June 9 but does that mean theywill be shipped that day or how does that work? Sorry about all the questions..I’m still new to all this stuff.
It’s almost too late to order. I’m nearing my cut-off mark. Terry actually sits down and signs each book. He will sign The Darkling Child sometime around the release date but it will take at least a week to ship out all copies. So if you want the book on the day of release, you’d better not buy from The Signed Page. Cheers!
I’m confused. The Darkling Child isn’t released until June 9th 2015, yet I picked this book up at a used bookstore, for $5.95 on May 30th 2015. Was this book previously released?
The book publishes on June 9th. One of two possibilities happened:
1. A reviewer got a review copy and sold it to your used bookstore.
2. The bookstore has already received their shipment and put it out early against the strict-on-sale date of June 9th.
Either way, you got lucky. 🙂
Dear Shawn, I have read all of Terry’s books up to The High Druid’s Blade. I wonder if Terry has ever visited the UK, and if there are any signed editions of his books not yet sold, as I would be very interested in obtaining a copy. Watching The Lord of the Ring films I know that the Sword of Shannara would make the best ever film. Yours is a God given gift of story telling Terry, long May you exercise it. From a devoted English fan.
Terry has visited the UK a lot. You can order signed books right now from The Signed Page at http://www.signedpage.com as well.
