Terry’s MisCon Schedule

Terry is attending MisCon this weekend in Missoula, Montana!

And they are keeping him quite busy! Me too, I might add! Here is a list of panels and signings that he will be partaking in May 22-25, 2015:

FRIDAY:

Fri 3:00 – 3:50 PM, Terry Brooks Book Signing
Terry Brooks’s signing is moderated, and we will maintain a STRICT 3 item maximum per person–zero exceptions. In order to keep the line moving, Terry can only personalize one item per person per trip through the line. (This is a solo signing).

I figure you can either have an early dinner or eat in the Green Room before having a later dinner. Does that work for you? If not, I can always move Kickass Women an hour earlier.

Fri 6:00 – 6:50 PM, Kickass Women
Bryn Ohmsford, Cersei Lannister, the Ilse Witch. What constitutes a kickass female character? Not taking any crap from anyone? Being able to literally kick some ass? Speaking and acting like a man? Is femininity retained in that case? Can a woman have the ability to kick ass and still be a “lady?” Are tough women different from tough guys?

Fri 7:00 – 7:30 PM, Opening Ceremonies
Come in out of the wasteland and find out what’s in store for you at MisCon 29. Our seers, scientists, and sages tell us this will likely only run about half an hour unless the forces of chaos force us to go longer.

Fri 7:30 – 8:30 PM Private Concom Signing/Hangout
We like to give our concom a little time to hang out with you. It usually takes about half an hour to an hour, depending on your plans. We ask you to sign some stuff for them here too, so they can focus on making MisCon happen while you’re signing publicly.

SATURDAY:

Sat 10:00 – 10:50 AM, The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly
Top industry publishing pros present some of their favorite (and not-so-favorite) covers in books and comics. Learn what they think makes a cover succeed (or not), and which covers make them envious.

Sat 2:00 – 2:50 PM, The Price of Power
As Terry Brooks once said, “A civilization once destroyed by misuse of power is a bit wary the second time out about what new power can do.” Magic, money, modern technology, political power: all these things have consequences, both good and bad. This panel will take a look at the double-sided nature of power. How can writers realistically work this into their work? What are some pop culture examples of this in action?

Sat 3:00 – 3:50 PM, Q&A: Author Terry Brooks
Pros and Guests: Terry Brooks, Shawn Speakman
The Panel: Join us for a Q&A with Author Guest of Honor, Terry Brooks

Sat 5:00 – 5:50 PM, To The Big Screen and Back
Storytelling across mediums can be challenging. In this panel, we’ll talk about screenwriting and novelizations: how they differ, the challenges inherent in both, and how you can learn to write each.

SUNDAY:

Sun 10:00 – 10:50 AM, Author Book Signing
(This is a standard signing with everyone in one big room. Your line will still be moderated with the same restrictions as the earlier signing)

Sun 1:00 – 1:50 PM, The Shannara Chronicles
Learn about Terry’s forthcoming television series on MTV, the Shannara Chronicles.

Sun 4:00 – 4:50 PM, Bringing Allanon to Life
Using the methods of a police sketch artist, Rob Carlos will bring the Druid Allanon to life as you watch. Rob will base his original pencil drawing on Terry’s description of Allanon and will refine his sketch to try and match how Terry sees the druid. (We’ve done this with Jim Butcher and Steve Erikson the past few years. Basically, you describe Allanon as Rob draws. He’ll ask you questions about the character’s bone structure, expression, demeanor, etc). You get to keep the drawing afterward).

Sun 5:00 – 5:50 PM, Writing Combat: Live Action
Our fighters, including MisCon 28 Author GoH Steven Erikson, Realms of Avalon fighter Matt Mcadoo, and author Eldon Thompson, will act out fight scenes read aloud by author Peter Orullian and MisCon 29 Author GoH Terry Brooks. They will bring to life a fight scene featuring famous weapon master Garret Jax as well as a fight scene from Peter’s new novel, Trial of Intentions. They will use actual weapons.

  1. Regarding the “Kickass Women”, I think most authors (and definitely Hollywood) get it wrong. I have written about two such characters, and they each have their own reasons for being tough. One of them is definitely a tomboy type who enjoys being physical, but that’s partly because she spent a lot of time with her father. She’s like me in that she’s confused enough to think guys are actually attracted to women who can go toe to toe with them. Lol. The other fights because she has to, but she is in every way a lady. She’s blessed with grace and speed and an iron will, so she excels at fighting, but it is not something she would have chosen to do in happier times. I’m sure she would have rather danced.

    • Eye of the Beholder. Good movie. I loved BeastMaster.

You can be kick-ass in so many ways, gender does not limit but extend the possibilities if you possess the mindset for it.

  2. MISCON in Missoula, Montana was awesome. Terry Brooks was informative, kind, and encouraging. It was a real treat to meet him and hear his comments on the panels.
Shawn Speakman also was interesting to hear. Thank-you for coming to MISCON.
