The Elfstones of Shannara and The Wishsong of Shannara by Terry Brooks are two masterpieces of epic fantasy!
As you probably already know, MTV and Sonar Entertainment are adapting The Elfstones of Shannara into a ten episode TV season titled The Shannara Chronicles. Terry Brooks is an executive producer on the project and he’s played an integral role in bringing his story to TV film. I have watched the show and they’ve done a great job maintaining the overall integrity of the story while making some minor changes that bring it more in line with the entirety of the other Shannara books. And wow, did they get Allanon, Wil, Amberle, and especially Eretria right in the adaptation!
In celebration of The Shannara Chronicles, Penguin Random House and MTV have put together new cover artwork, to be featured on the paperbacks of Elfstones and Wishsong. These books will be available in US bookstores on December 1st! No word on international new covers.
And here they are! Click to embiggin’!

In my opinion—if my biased opinion matters at all, of course—these two books will make excellent gifts for the fantasy reader in your life!
And for your own shelves, of course!
Again, these will be available December 1, 2015 in fine US bookstores!
The Shannara Chronicles premieres January 5, 2016!

I can’t wait to add them to my collection. I found an old school-binding copy of the First King”–hope to get it signed someday. Re reading the “Sword Trilogy”. Fun to meet old friends once again……
This looks like a good omen to me.
How long are the MTV movies in hours will they be?
This is not a movie. It is a TV series. 43 minutes an episode times 10 episodes. So about 7 hours total to tell the entire story of Elfstones.
Thank you and my bobo how often will it be on once a week?
How long in hours are the series on MTV?
I like the second two, but the first is a little bland. Part of what drew me to the series in the first place were the vistas on the covers. They (coincidentally) foretold of the vistas described by Terry in the text. The new ones smack of a different flavor to the stories at their respective frame of reference for the new and old world concepts, but I think I like this flavor as well. The one thing I really liked (and recall much debate on the matter with my brother) was the idea that the old and new worlds were clearly linked, but he never gave it away. Even the great war retelling by Allanon was always cryptic. As though it could have been a some parallel universe. You always had to wait to find out for sure one way or the other. (And wait we did!) 🙂
Looking forward to purchase these new editions. I’m very excited to seeing The Shannara Chronicles on MTV. I’m a big fan of Terry Brooks and I’m sure if the TV adaption is anywhere close to how Good his books are I’m sure it’ll be a great success. January 5, 2016 can’t come any sooner. I’m hopeing other merchandise like t-shirts, fan club and magazines (like LOTR had ), and prints will be made available.
Interesting. Two covers for Elfstones. One for Wishsong. Does that mean Season 2 will Be Wishsong? (Season one will surely be a hit!) Hmmm.
No, it does not mean Season 2 Wishsong. Season 2 hasn’t even been green lit yet. They haven’t started production. They haven’t started filming. What Season 2 will be is still up in the air.
The cover on Wishsong is purely to help new readers understand that if they like reading Elfstones they can continue on with the books.
Oh. Well, you can blame a guy for Wishing. : )
Wishing never hurt anyone… 🙂
Except that tree that went through too many seasons too fast on a little girl’s whim… 🙂
I like the tv series covers. I’m going to order the Amberle cover of Elfstones and the copy of Wishsong with Allanon on the cover. I already have these 2 books, but I say hey what the heck?
I am beyond excited. I have all the books and have read them at least three times through these many years. I hope they do a great job interpreting Terry Brooks work.
Yes, I have been reading these books for a life time. It is exciting to see all of the renewed interest in them. I cannot wait for the tv shows.
Do we get signed copies of these through the signed page?!?!?! Pleas say yes….I want all three!!!!!!
I’m considering it. 🙂
Any decision on this yet?
I decided against it until I talk to Terry about it. He’s been so busy lately and, if we do this, we’ll do it in January instead. Stay tuned.
That is my question too!! Come on Shawn, hook us up 🙂
I would love to add them to my collection!
😉
I really like the new covers for Elfstones? I’m curious is Wishsong being added to the new tv series? And what about Sword of Shannara? Even though the stories are generational it is still considered a trilogy! Does this mean that Wishsong will be Season 2? And what about Sword will it be a prequel in Season 3?
Season 2 of The Shannara Chronicles hasn’t been green lit. So no, Wishsong has not been added to the TV show. There is a new cover on the book to entice readers who find Elfstones to keep reading.
