November Ask Terry Posted

For many years the only chance a fan had of speaking to Terry was to meet him at tour events or conventions.

With the establishment of this website in 2000, Terry began accepting two questions from each fan per month. On the last day of the month, five questions are randomly drawn. Terry answers these five questions and they are posted monthly for your enjoyment.

Below are the questions selected from November 2016 and Terry’s answers! Enjoy!

NOVEMBER ASK TERRY Q&A

Good Day Readers,

Back at it for Ask Terry November before I head out the door on a mini vacation which I badly need. All that can be well is very well at the moment, if you don’t look to the East. Love the PNW. We are like another country out here and to some we are like Brigadoon or Narnia. Sort of mythic and maybe not even in the US.

So with that in mind, let’s talk a little fantasy!

Ian Williams writes: Hey Terry, longtime reader and fan here. I actually had the honor of meeting you at a panel at Norwescon in Seattle in 2013. I was wondering if there was any news of a media adaptation of the Word and Void series? That has always been my favorite trilogy out of your work.

Terry Brooks replies: Sorry, Ian, but I haven’t had a bite yet on Word & Void. That series has always been well loved, but sort of an ugly stepsister to Shannara and Magic Kingdom. Not to me, of course. Anyway, I am working on doing something with that series and hope to have a report later this year. Or sooner, if fate smiles on me. I would love to see it done in film – I think. Got to be careful what you wish for, though. So we’ll do some ‘wait and see’ for now.

Ellamarie DeVault writes: Will you be writing more books in the Word/Void mythos?

Terry Brooks replies: What is this? Hey, Shawn! You’re letting them gang up on me! How unfair is that? Well, Ellamarie, you have a right to ask the question, so I will answer it. See question #1 above with answer. Next, please! Oh, that was rude. What can I say? A concerted effort is afoot to try to bring Word and Void to either a big or little screen. It can be said, but then so can almost anything, if you don’t care that much about the truth. Learned that recently. Oh, did I speak out of turn? Maybe I better just shut up. Or maybe I will write something in W & V as a temporary substitute for anything visual . . .???

Sylvia Trumble writes: Could you tell me where the Valley of the Hawk is, in the Four Lands of Shannara?

Terry Brooks replies: Sylvia, you have exposed me. Not only can I not tell you where the Valley of the Hawk is, I’m not even sure I know where it is. It is meant to be a mystery. The better question is, “What do you think?”

Matt writes: The title of the new Shannara book has me intrigued. Could the Black Elfstone be used to reverse the magic of the Forbidding? After Witch Wraith, I’m thinking about a certain character…

Terry Brooks replies: So many people are, Matt. And they are all thinking pretty much the same thing. What do I intend to do about Grianne Ohmsford? Is she consigned to the Seventh Circle of Hell for all eternity or will she find redemption at last? Can’t say, for sure. I can say that the title of the new book speaks to the very magic you also speak of, but in a way that does not involve Grianne in that book. Maybe later? You know I won’t tell you.

Astrid val Hal writes: I just read on your website that Landover may not become a series/movie? I hope it does because that’s what my mother and I have waited for, for years now. I’ve read the series three times in dutch translation. Thank you.

Terry Brooks replies: Well, I have waited rather a long time too and under extremely trying circumstances. Three sets of writers over a ten year period – all for naught. We have our star, Steve Carell, we have our producers and writer and all the rest – except we lost our studio for reasons I can barely manage to think about let alone talk about – and which are peculiar to La La Land. So I continue to sit and wait and hope, and there are good people, including my friend Andy, working to make it happen. In this year, of all years, all things might be possible. Could this be one?

More answers coming soon, including those for December and January!

Good magic to all of you,
