Pre-Order Now: Warrior by Terry Brooks

It has been a great year for Terry Brooks readers!

First, he published The Skaar Invasion, Book 2 of The Fall of Shannara. Its ending left people wanting more. And Terry is delivering — in an entirely different way. On October 2nd, Terry is publishing Street Freaks, his SF futuristic thriller that is getting rave reviews so far. But until then, he has written something new.

And it will please all of those who love the Word and the Void trilogy and the short story that was its basis, Imaginary Friends!

WARRIOR – PUBLISHING SEPTEMBER 11, 2018

In 1997, Terry Brooks reinvented the fantasy genre with Running with the Demon, a dark contemporary urban fantasy. Now he returns to that Word and Void mythos with a novella sure to delight his readers and a story as powerful as that previous trilogy.

Sinnissippi Park, in Hopewell, Illinois, has long been a place of magic.

Jack McCall learned this at a young age when confronted with a deadly childhood disease. He overcame that threat with aid from the unlikeliest of companions — the woodland creature Pick and his trusted owl Daniel — and the magic that existed within his own heart.

Now grown, Jack has graduated from college, leaving behind that terrible time and having never witnessed magic again. That is about to change. Lacking direction in life, he is summoned by the Lady, who recruits men and women to the service of the Word. For she is in dire need of Jack’s unique history to help preserve the world’s future — a service that will be needed only once but on which all things hinge.

I know some of you are asking, “What’s Imaginary Friends?” If you haven’t read it, Imaginary Friends is a 9000-word magical story about young Jack McCall’s fight against a terrible foe in Sinnissippi Park. Terry wrote it in 1991 for the anthology Once Upon a Time. Little did he know then that it would become the basis for Running with the Demon. For those of you looking to read it, I republished the story in Unfettered, currently available in hardcover ($30.00) and ebook ($2.99). Here are links:

Its sequel, Warrior, is a novella. It is shorter than a Terry Brooks book but much larger than a short story. It is 32,000 words, about one third of a novel, and is sure to please any Word and Void fan. The amazing artist Donato will be painting its cover and contributing several interior illustrations. The novella will only be released as an ebook on Grim Oak Press, Amazon, B&N, Kobo, and iBooks. For those of you who do not have an e-reader like a Kindle or Nook, Grim Oak Press is offering a PDF edition you can read on your computer.

As a long-time Word and Void fan, I loved Warrior. A great sequel to Imaginary Friends and a wonderful companion to the trilogy. If you are looking for something new to read from Terry Brooks, this is it! Pre-order now!

    • When Terry has written enough stories to fill out a collection, I have no doubt that the Word/Void novella will be a part of it. No idea when he will write enough stories for that collection to happen but I’m sure Del Rey will publish it to great fanfare.

  1. In my opinion the Word/Void trilogy is some of his best work and is my favorite. I want to purchase the novella, but don’t have or want to buy a kindle. Will they be releasing this novella in any other format?
