July Ask Terry Posted

Terry Brooks

For many years the only chance a fan had of speaking to Terry was to meet him at tour events or conventions.

With the establishment of this website in 2000, Terry began accepting two questions from each fan per month. On the last day of the month, five questions are randomly drawn. Terry answers these five questions and they are posted monthly for your enjoyment.

Below are the questions selected from July 2019 and Terry’s answers! Enjoy!

JULY 2019 ASK TERRY Q&A

Greetings Readers One and All,

As you know, i tend to get busy with projects on writing and traveling.  Thus, no Ask Terry of late.  So I am now beginning an effort to catch up and continue on.  Hence, the following:

Jacqueline Joy Pepin writes: I have been reading the annotated version of The Sword of Shannara and have found out a few things that I never realized, that despite the fact that I have read all of the Shannara many times over over the course of the past 25 years. Do you have plans to do anything like this with the other works? It seems like a long shot given the vast size of the world and the amount of novels you have written. Would love to know more about some things. Particularly with regards to the Heritage series and it’s genesis.

Terry Brooks replies: The Annotated Sword of Shannara was a lot of fun to do. My WebDruid asked me a lot of questions I hadn’t thought about in a long time and I think the final book turned out great. I don’t know about doing other books though. That is entirely up to Del Rey and if Shawn has time but I would be open to it.

Jane Dionne writes: After reading the Shannara series, I was wondering if you ever wrote about how the Druid Keep was established?

Terry Brooks replies:  Have not done this.  It was my intention to do so when I finished writing the pre-history, which I have not done.  The last book in that set would end with the building of Paranor and the advent of the Druid Era.  Still a plan, but not right away.

Mark B. Carter writes: I was wondering if you ever plan to connect Nest Freemark and the Knights of the Word, and the Bearers of the Black Staff with Paranor and the Druids of Brona, Galaphile and the first Druids?

Terry Brooks replies: In a word, no.  The Word & Void books take place in a different time, with different characters and a different slant on things.  The Shannara books begin with Armageddon’s Children and will end next June.  Word & Void will have a new novella included in the collection of my short fiction coming out late the October, which will be titled Small Magic.  Hope you will want to read it.

Karl Schraut writes: Would any of the “fill-in” stories you may write be about Allanon? He is, far and away, my favorite of the Druids and I would love some fleshed out back story on him.

Terry Brooks replies: Likely so, although I have not settled on which other Shannara books I will be writing or even when I will begin to write them.  You can find one in the short story collection referred to above.  Maybe that will help tide you over.

Eclipse Andrew Cocuzza-Langston writes: I read one of your earlier works called the Magic Kingdom of Landover. I read them all. I was wondering will you ever return to this series with a new book?

Terry Brooks replies: Soon, I think.  If a movie deal goes through as I think it might, I will write one immediately.  Stay tuned.

And on that note, back to work writing my next book, to publish in 2021 and start you off on a new epic fantasy adventure.  See you on the road sometime this year, if I can.  I will out touring one place or another almost all year.  Check the website for locations.
